Getting Started as an Online Learner

Use this checklist to help guide your semester journey.  In addition to the items listed, set your personal goals:

  • Confirm that any tuition and fees have been paid five days prior to the start of the semester.
  • Review key dates of the semester – first day, last day, holidays, Registration deadlines.
  • Set up a study schedule and block out time for each class weekly. 

Technology Setup

  • Test your internet connection and computer hardware.
  • Review the checklist from UC’s Digital Technology Solutions.
  • Install or update necessary software (Zoom, Office 365, PDF reader, publisher sites, etc.).
  • Bookmark important college portals (email, library, tech support, etc.). You’ll log in every time with your UC username and password.
  • Set up a reliable cloud storage system (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox).
  • Save contact info for UC Tech support – (513) 556-HELP or (866) 397-3382. 
  • Review course syllabi for all enrolled classes.
    • Note key dates: assignment deadlines, quizzes, midterms, finals.
  • Order or download required textbooks and materials.
  • Create a folder (digital or physical) for each course to organize materials.
  • Find and save contact info for professors, academic advisors, and your student success coordinator.

Academic Progress

  • Set up notifications from Canvas and subscribe to discussions to get updates sent to your email.
  • Submit all assignments on time (double-check submission confirmations).
  • Check grades and feedback regularly in Canvas.
  • Reassess study schedule: Are you keeping up with assignments and readings?
  • Attend virtual office hours with professors.
  • Start preparing for midterms by reviewing notes and past assignments.
  • Participate actively in online discussions and group projects.
  • Seek help (tutoring, study groups) if you’re struggling. Contact your SSC for guidance.
  • Meet with an academic advisor to plan for next semester and discuss majors/minors. 

Personal Well-Being

  • Evaluate your workload and stress levels. Adjust if needed.
  • Take regular breaks and practice self-care (sleep, exercise, social time).
  • Connect with online student communities or support groups. 

Technology Check

  • Back up all coursework and notes to cloud storage.
  • Install updates on your devices to avoid last-minute technical issues. 

Academic Wrap-Up

  • Confirm final assignment and exam dates.
  • Begin reviewing course material for finals early.
  • Check Canvas for any outstanding assignments.
  • Complete any required course evaluations.

Next Steps

  • Review grades and academic standing once posted.
  • Contact professors for feedback or clarification on final grades if needed.
  • Meet with an academic advisor to address any concerns.
  • Return or sell textbooks as appropriate.

Personal Organization

  • Save copies of important assignments and projects for your portfolio.
  • Clean up and organize your digital workspace for the next semester.
  • Reflect on what worked well this semester and what you need to improve.
  • Acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how small.
  • Review goals for next semester and set new ones.
