Faculty Spotlight: Dr. David J. Kelley Inducted into Ohio Sports Hall of Fame

Dr. David J. Kelley has made his mark on the world of sport administration. 

He is a full-time professor at the University of Cincinnati, an author, an innovator of online education, and now a Class of 2026 inductee into the Ohio Sports Hall of Fame (OSHOF). Established in 2024, OSHOF celebrates the state’s rich sports legacy by recognizing players, coaches, officials, and others within the industry for their contributions.  

Dr. Kelley will be inducted as a Contributor on October 17th, 2026. Before he receives this well-deserved honor, we had the opportunity to speak with him about his sport administration career, his teaching, and how he uses both as Program Coordinator of UC’s online Master of Science in Sport Administration (SPAD) program.

When asked about his initial reaction to being named an OSHOF inductee, Dr. Kelley expressed both genuine surprise and gratitude. 

“It is incredibly humbling,” he said. “Ohio has such a rich sports tradition, and so many remarkable people have contributed to that legacy. To be recognized alongside individuals who have made a lasting impact on sports in our state is something I never imagined when I started my career.” 

Even so, when you look at Dr. Kelley’s years of dedication to his field, it’s easy to see why he was honored. 

While working in the Vinton County school district, Dr. Kelley wore many hats: teacher, coach, and athletic administrator, to name a few. His experiences in Vinton County shaped his philosophy on interscholastic athletic leadership. 

“I learned that successful athletic programs are built on relationships, trust, and consistency—it’s not just about wins and losses,” he said. “During my time in Vinton County, we faced significant budget deficiencies, which meant I had to learn quickly how to generate revenue and secure resources to keep our athletic programs afloat. I learned that success happens when everyone, from school leaders and coaches to parents, alumni, and local businesses, works toward a shared vision.”

Another experience that was foundational in Dr. Kelley’s career was earning his master’s degree at Syracuse University. While serving as Graduate Manager under Jim Boeheim (Naismith Hall of Fame Basketball Coach), Dr. Kelley had a “front-row seat” to excellence in both collegiate athletics and leadership. Earning his PhD from Ohio University was the final puzzle piece.  

“What began as a research endeavor evolved into an opportunity to help prepare and mentor athletic leaders,” Dr. Kelley said of his dissertation, which later became the foundation for online sport administration education in Ohio and beyond. It’s also been critical to his continued career in education. 

Over the years, he’s continued to value how intertwined education and athletics can be, particularly for how both can encourage confidence and help young people develop life skills. 

“Sports have always been a powerful teacher in my life,” he shared. “As I gained experience in athletics, I found myself increasingly drawn to mentoring young professionals. I enjoyed helping others navigate challenges and discover opportunities. Eventually, I realized I could expand that impact through higher education and help prepare future leaders for the sport industry.”

With so many professional achievements under his belt, Dr. Kelley still knows which one is his proudest.

“Without question, I am most proud of the students and professionals I have helped develop throughout my career,” he said. 

Dr. Kelley’s dedication to his students spills into everything he does. As a Certified Master Athletic Administrator with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA), he teaches workshops on revenue generation, grant writing, corporate sponsorships, and more at the annual NIAAA conference. In partnership with the NIAAA Leadership Training Institute Certification Program, he is the innovator of online education for both aspiring and working interscholastic athletic administrators. He's published two books on athletics, both of which aim to guide individuals in the sport industry. 

Last but not least, of course, is Dr. Kelley’s work at the University of Cincinnati. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in sport economics and financial management, and, as Program Coordinator of the online SPAD program, he’s been able to “expand access to graduate education for sport professionals across the country.” 

He sees accessibility for working professionals as particularly value. Many of them are balancing school alongside multiple responsibilities—at work, at home, and in the community. Online learning allows students—like Jimmy Picerelli, Assistant Director of Athletics Recruiting at Brown University and Dr. Kelley's former student—to advance in their careers without putting them on pause. 

Another key advantage? It lets online learners connect theory and practice every step of the way. 

“Students can immediately apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world challenges they face as coaches, athletic directors, and sport administrators,” Dr Kelley said. “I've seen countless professionals use their graduate education to strengthen their leadership skills, earn promotions, pursue certification opportunities, and make a greater impact on the students and communities they serve. That's what makes online education such a powerful tool for professional growth and development.”

Dr. Kelley’s teaching philosophy itself is centered around practical, real-world examples. Because of his extensive background in numerous areas of athletics, he can “share lessons learned from actual challenges, decisions, and experiences in athletics, helping students understand how academic concepts apply in professional practice.” 

Due to early-career experiences with budget limitations and grant writing, he particularly emphasizes sport finance to his students.

“I think one of the biggest misconceptions is that sports organizations run on passion alone,” he explained. “As fans, we see the games, the rivalries, and the excitement, but behind every successful athletic program or organization are people managing budgets, raising funds, and making countless decisions that affect the student-athlete experience.” 

Dr. Kelley ensures that UC sport administration students graduate with an understanding of finance, budgeting, and resource management. What other takeaways are imperative to success in the industry? 

For starters, he encourages online learners to think about the field more broadly—as well as the variety of opportunities available within it. So many pathways in the industry allow athletic administrators to make a big impact, such as:

• Facilities
• Community relations
• Educational and youth sports
• Professional sports
• Nonprofit organizations

Building skills like communication, leadership, strategic thinking, and business knowledge is how aspiring sport professionals stand out from other hopefuls. The SPAD program culminates in a capstone project completed with an industry partner; it gives students an invaluable opportunity to tackle real-world challenges and hone their problem-solving skills. 

“One of the biggest challenges facing sports administrators today is the pace of change,” Dr. Kelley offered as an example. “Technology, shifting demographics, financial pressures, and evolving expectations from students, parents, fans, and communities continue to reshape the industry. At the same time, those challenges create tremendous opportunities for innovation and growth.”

Both in and out of the classroom, Dr. Kelley continues to see finance as key to sport industry success. The growing importance of fundraising even prompted him to publish his first book, Sports Fundraising: Dynamic Methods for Schools Universities and Youth Sport Organizations. His newest book, Internship Playbook: Skills and Strategies for Sport Industry Success, shifts focus to advice for emerging professionals.

Nevertheless, both publications ultimately provide the same thing: practical strategies and guidance that administrators can implement immediately. 

In advance of his Hall of Fame induction, Dr. Kelley has found himself reflecting on the impactful nature of sports—and how he’s been able to make an impact throughout his career. Most of all, he views his induction as an opportunity to celebrate the people who supported and impacted him along the way. 

He’s particularly excited to share the experience with his greatest supporters: his family.

"Their encouragement, sacrifices, and unwavering belief in me made many of the opportunities and accomplishments I have enjoyed possible,” he said. "I’m also excited to celebrate with former students and friends who have been part of this journey. Also, I look forward to celebrating the many individuals who have helped shape Ohio's rich and proud sports heritage and being honored alongside such an accomplished group of inductees.”

Although October 17th draws near, Dr. Kelley doesn’t see this honor as an end to his career by any means. His proudest professional achievement is the impact he’s able to have on others’ lives and careers; through his work at UC, he’s able to continue pursuing that mission. 

“From my early days as a teacher, coach, and athletic administrator in Vinton County to my work at the University of Cincinnati, I have had the privilege of helping students and professionals develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become effective leaders in athletics and education. Seeing former students become athletic directors, coaches, sport executives, and community leaders is incredibly rewarding.”
