Cancer Registry Management

CERT1

Why study Cancer Registry Management?

The Cancer Registry Management certificate program is a one-year federal financial aid eligible online certificate that prepares you to work as a data management expert who reports cancer statistics for various healthcare agencies. Credentialed Cancer Registrars provide support for cancer program development, ensure compliance with reporting standards, and serve as a resource for cancer information.

Cancer registrars are data information specialists who record and capture a complete history, diagnosis, treatment, and health status for every cancer patient in the US. This data provides essential information to researchers, healthcare providers, and public health officials to better monitor and advance cancer treatments, conduct research, and improve cancer prevention and screening programs.

Program Highlights

  • National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) Accredited
  • The University of Cincinnati is one of the very few institutions offering this program online.
  • Professional internships are available at numerous practice facilities throughout the U.S. (in addition to our state-of-the-art, web-based simulations).

Federal regulations require the University of Cincinnati to publicly disclose whether completion of certain programs that lead or may lead to professional licensure or certification would meet a given state’s educational requirements for a specific professional license or certification required for employment in an occupation (regardless of whether the program is on-ground, online, or hybrid).   To learn whether a University program meets a given state’s educational requirements, please visit the University of Cincinnati State Authorization webpage.

Employment of Cancer Registry Managers is projected to grow 22 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. The demand for health services is expected to increase as the population ages. An aging population will need more medical tests, treatments, and procedures. The June 2006 National Cancer Registrar Association (NCRA) Workforce Study estimated that there were 7,280 registrars in the workforce at that time, with a projected need to add 800 more over the next 15 years. It also noted that additional registrars would be needed to replace those who retire from the field.

To succeed as a cancer registrar, you should be well organized, have excellent communication skills and be detail oriented. In addition, you will need a strong background in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and be proficient with technology and data analysis.

Healthcare is the fastest-growing employment industry, with more than 2.4 million new jobs expected by 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (bls.gov). Demand for Cancer Registrars is also increasing with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting more than 20% growth over the next three to five years (much faster than the average for all other occupations).

Cancer registrars work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, central or state cancer registries, accrediting organizations, government agencies, software vendors, pharmaceutical companies, insurance agencies and more. Working remotely is also a growing trend for cancer registrars, and some registrars work for outsourcing companies hired by hospitals to staff their cancer registry. According to the National Cancer Registrars Association, the average salary for a full-time registrar is between $69,110 and $99,195 depending on years of experience.

Some employers require cancer registry professionals to have the Oncology Data Specialist® (ODS) credential. The ODS credential demonstrates a requisite knowledge and professional competence needed within the cancer registry. It is nationally recognized in the recruitment and retention of registry personnel. In order to sit for the ODS (formerly CTR) exam, students must graduate from an NCRA-accredited program (like ours).

In fact, UC’s Cancer Registry Management (CRM) Certificate program is one of very few accredited programs that is offered 100% online.
